This is mainly for working on keeping steady time. You can plug a bass drum trigger into it and get a mini electronic drum set. You can also plug in music to play along with. I think it didn't do well because it cost too much: about $270 when it was discontinued. I always ran it on batteries for ease of use but you can get an adapter to power it.
