FEATURES for Sequim & Pt Angeles Area
• Dramatic long red tassels (12–24")
• Grows 2.5–4 ft tall in our cool‑summer climate. Can be pruned to keep shorter, bushier & fuller.
• Heat‑loving ornamental amaranth
• Stronger stems here than in hot climates
• Blooms mid‑summer through fall
• Excellent for cut or dried arrangements
• Heavy self‑seeder — comes back yearly if allowed to drop seed. Leave seeds on surface & needs 80 F to germinate.
LIGHT
• Full sun required for best height and tassel length
• Thrives against south‑facing walls, gravel areas, warm spots
SOIL
• Average to fertile, well‑drained soil
• Raised beds or mounded rows warm fastest in our area
• Avoid heavy clay or cold, wet soil
WATER
• Moderate water; keep evenly moist while young
• Drought‑tolerant once established
• Avoid overwatering (cool nights + wet soil = weak stems)
TEMPERATURE
• Frost‑sensitive — plant after last frost
• Performs best in warm microclimates
• Cool Sequim/PA nights slow growth but deepen color
PLANTING
• Direct sow or transplant after soil warms
• Seeds are tiny — barely cover
• Germinates in 7–14 days
• Space 12–18" apart
FEEDING
• Light feeder
• Compost at planting is enough
• Too much nitrogen = tall, floppy stems
SUPPORT
• May need staking in windy areas
• Choose sheltered spots (our Strait winds can snap stems)
SELF‑SEEDING
• Very reliable reseeder in Sequim/PA
• Expect volunteers each spring
• Thin seedlings to maintain spacing
PESTS/DISEASE
• Generally trouble‑free
• Occasional aphids or flea beetles on young plants
• Root rot only in soggy soil
