The frame measures 27” by 21.5”, and 2” wide. Originally the frame was sold, perhaps over 100 years ago, as a paper backing sealed framed print? I have removed the duct tape from the glass sheet and frame backside which was used to hold it temporarily onto the frame backside. The frame backside has remnants you can see of what was a paper covering glued on to hold the print and glass cover in place, see pics. OR, was the paper backing, print/s and glass added much later? The paper backing remnants look real old. The frame looks over 100 years old to me with original dark finish that has high point rub spots, see pics.
The 2 prints are glued together backside to backside, and they look antique to me- prints that are maybe 125 years old or so and are obviously water stained on the side.. Possibly somebody at some time removed the paper backing on the frame and added an additional print, so that either print could be displayed as wanted.
At any rate the frame is beautiful, most likely 100 or more years old, no chips or cracks, tight joints, and needs only minor restoration- spot match staining where the stain has rubbed off at the high points with time/use, then a new spot coat of low gloss over that. I have done a basic cleaning of the frame with damp cloths; next a more complete cleaning could be done before spot match staining. The frame would be beautiful once restored. Note the the 2 very old eyelet screws on the backside for wall hanging; they have easily removable superficial rust on them, see close-ups. Please ask any questions.
