Song of the South won two Academy Awards in 1948. Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah won an Oscar for Best Song, and James Baskett won an honorary Oscar "For his able and heart-warming characterization of Uncle Remus, friend and story teller to the children of the world". The film was also nominated for Best Scoring of a Musical Picture.
Despite his stardom in Song of the South, the fact that Baskett was black in a racially divided America hindered him in many ways. In some way, this was rectified in 1948, when Baskett was given an honorary Academy Award for his performance as Uncle Remus.
This is one of Disney's most charming, most heartwarming movies and it is very hard to find*** With his immaculate blend of technical know-how and animation plus live action---Disney amazed Washington audiences in 1946.
